The Wicked Witch

Panto season again, and shooting this years resulted in some crackers, in large part due to some impressive light and haze effects used.

The Fancy Light

A ring light is used in photography for close-up portraits - it gives a very distinctive and flattering look. I made one myself using a bit of plywood and some old-fashioned lightbulbs - easily the best £30 I've ever spent! I call it the 'fancy' light...

George

This is George. I think he has a thing for hats - so much so that when none are available he'll improvise...

The Barber

This is my barber, Chris. For most of my life I never had a barber - I'd just pick somewhere and take a chance, and more often than not come out disappointed. Then one day Chris did the honours, and since then I've followed him where ever he goes - my two boys and I always refer to him as 'The Genius'!

He recently opened his own shop so I popped over on the opening day to capture the proud proprietor.

Fernilee in September

Whenever I'm going somewhere new, or somewhere I know to be picturesque, I take my camera. This can be a bit of a pain (my camera bag isn't small), but often pays off. On a recent trip to Buxton I passed Errwood Reservoir, which was like a mirror and quite unlike I've ever seen it before...

Moonset over the Lovell Telescope

Suffering temporarily (I hope!) from a bad back, I woke before the sun one morning in July and giving up on sleep headed up a favourite hill to watch the sun rise, and hopefully catch the full moon setting. Half way up the hill I saw the moon, very close to the horizon. Not wanting to risk waiting until the summit I took a couple of shots, which was fortunate as by the time I made it to the top it was gone. Photoshop was made for occasions like this, so I combined the image of the moon from lower down with the more scenic view form the top, resulting in the first image here.

The Big Idiot

Enjoying the heatwave the UK is currently experiencing, the dog and I took a walk up a nearby hill, where he posed for this epic portrait.

Welsh Highlands

A holiday in Wales saw me and the family catching the steam train to Blaenau Ffestiniog, where we strolled around the spectacular hills and valleys.

Sunshine on the Beach

The sea, sunshine and family combined to present a great photo opportunity over the weekend.

MediaCityUK, Manchester

Winter in the North West of England is not the best time for a photographer - aside from a brief period of snow, the world is mostly grey, wet, and visually uninteresting. Having reason to make a trip to Media City in Manchester, I was fortunate to be outside when the sun popped out for a while, making a spectacle of the glass and steel.

Snow

We've had a great deal of snow in the last couple of weeks, which has made for some great shooting. Unable to made it as far as my favourite spot in the Goyt Valley, I stopped off at Pym Chair and walked up the ridge, where drifts and the setting sun made for a surreal landscape.

Memories of Summer

Last summer I took some shots of a friend's dog - I couldn't post any of them here then as they were for a gift for the owner. They remind me of the glorious days of warmth and sunshine that seem so far away at the moment...

Snow Portrait

Isolating the subject from the background can be a difficult thing to accomplish in photography, but on the day I took this is was a breeze - a snowy, foggy day made everything white, except beautiful lady you see here...

Saltburn Pier

Saltburn-by-the-Sea (to use its full and rather unwieldy name) is fortunate enough to have its own pier. A picturesque spot, it's a natural magnet for photographers - I saw three others on the morning I took this!

This is a long-exposure shot, which means the picture was taken over a relatively long period of time (15 seconds to be precise) - this turns the sea into something like a low-lying fog, which gives a very magical effect.

The River Goyt

The River Goyt tumbles down a magical valley before it enters Errwood Reservoir - it's beautiful at any time of year for different reasons - right now, after some heavy rainfall, the river itself is the star attraction.

Backstage

I previously mentioned my involvement with the Bollington Festival Players (www.bollingtonfestivalplayers.com); as well as taking publicity shots I also get to take some backstage - the lighting conditions are typically very poor, but a little processing can turn a dull shot into something striking and dramatic...

Stephen Joseph Theatre

This is the Stephen Joseph Theatre in Scarborough - a beautiful Art Deco theatre and cinema. I was there for a wedding, and it made the perfect venue for a modern, secular ceremony. There's something magical about this style of building for me - a perfect fusion of art and utility.
